Perched on the east shore of the Bay, Albany, developed as a bedroom community for commuters to San Francisco, has come into its own.  With good schools, quiet residential streets, and busy Solano Avenue, the city has a little bit of everything showcased in family-friendly style.

It’s no surprise that Albany schools are in the 90th percentile,  as UC Berkeley’s family student housing is here. Home prices have been rising, but still offer an alternative to Berkeley or Piedmont. Look for 2- and 3-bedroom single-family homes, including Craftsman bungalows and Mediterranean-style residences.

You’ll be able to find much of what you need on Solano Avenue, filled with family-run businesses that offer food and specialty services at reasonable rates.  From boutiques and jewelers to cafés and grocers, this shopping street is so beloved that every year people come for the celebrated Solano Stroll that showcases all the vendors.

Albany hosts the Albany Bulb, a former landfill turned green space that acts as an art installation and dog park. There’s also a 35-lane bowling alley and the beloved Albany Twin movie theatre, featuring the best of independent film anywhere.

Albany neighbors Berkeley, Richmond, and El Cerrito and because freeways, BART and buses are easy to access here you’re only minutes away from Oakland and a short drive to San Francisco.
